GPL goes 'green', adopts Environmental Managment Plan

Visakhapatnam, May 11: A new feather has been added to the cap of the country's deepest multi-purpose Port, Gangavaram Port Limited (GPL), with the port adopting Environmental Management Plan (EMP) for effective pollution control to develop more cleaner and greener environment.

Talking to media persons here yesterday, GPL Environment Senior Manager D Jyothi said," India’s deepest multi-purpose Port has adopted the Environmental Management Plan (EMP) for effective pollution control and the development of cleaner and greener environment." She said the Port had adopted the EMP consisting of mitigation measures, monitoring programme and institutional measures to minimise environmental impacts.

"The EMP plan aims at controlling pollution at the source level to the possible extent with most advanced technology followed by treatment measures before they were discharged," she said.

Among the various measures adopted by the GPL were the construction of wind breaking wall near the boundary of Gangavaram village as a protective measure, adoption of the most modern Mechanical Dust Suppression System (MDSS) for effective pollution control, special water cannons for spraying water with high pressure up to a radius of 50 mts and a height of 15 meters to forms a blanket of mist which captures the dust by making it heavier to settle down, Ms Jyothi said.

Rain water harvesting system was also established at the port and all the trucks were instructed to cover the cargo with tarpaulin to avoid spillages on roads.

She added that all the biodegradable waste was being used as manure for plantation under solid waste management plan.

The GPL had also established two Sewage Treatment Plants (STP).

The treated water was used for the dust suppression and green belt development, she added.

The GPL had also developed green belt in an area of 240 acres with 60,000 plants.

Various parameters like Ambient Air Quality, Noise Monitoring, Ground Water Quality Monitoring, Marine water and Sediment Monitoring were regularly monitored at the GPL, she added.

The reports were furnished to Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB), Visakhapatnam on monthly basis, which were well within the statutory limits, She added.
